In their current second Test match against New Zealand, which is taking place in Pune on Thursday, India is behind by 243 runs after posting 16/1 at Stumps on Day 1. India reached 16/1 in 11 overs at Stumps, with Shubman Gill (10*) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (6*) remaining undefeated. When Rohit Sharma left for a nine-ball duck, he was the wicket lost. In 79.1 overs, New Zealand was first bowled out for 259 runs. Washington Sundar was in outstanding form and earned his selection with a seven-wicket haul. On Day 1, New Zealand was performing admirably, and it appeared as though they would win the second session until Sundar stopped them. After getting Tom Blundell out on the final delivery of the second session, Sundar became the first bowler in this series to dismiss Rachin Ravindra. After Tea, he went on to take out Daryl Mitchell in his opening over. Glenn Phillips (9), Mitchell Santner (33), Tim Southee (5), and Ajaz Patel (4) were among his other dismissals.

Shortly after Rohit Sharma had brought Ravindra back on, Sundar had dismissed him on 65 off 105 in the second session with an unplayable delivery. Ravindra and Devon Conway appeared to be rather relaxed during the first thirty minutes of the second session. This went on for a few more minutes after that, but Ashwin finally fired Conway after a fairly unimpressive performance. In 141 balls, he had amassed 76 runs. After that, Ravindra and Mitchell shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 59, with the former surpassing 50 for the second time in this series. At least the Kiwis were allowed to run singles while India kept up their defensive fielding.
Conway hit a four off the opening ball of the session, which was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, to surpass his half-century. Before Rohit Sharma gave the ball to Ashwin, the bowler bowled four overs at the beginning of the session, with Washington Sundar sending them in from the other side. On Day 1 of the second Test in Pune, Ashwin had earlier taken two wickets in the opening session, which may have left New Zealand feeling more satisfied than the other team. Conway scored 47 off 108 balls as New Zealand reached 92/2 in 31 overs at lunchtime. On 13 balls, Ravindra scored five runs.
Following a somewhat blustery start from visiting skipper Tom Latham and Devon Conway, Ashwin made the breakthrough in his very first over of the second Test match between India and New Zealand in Pune. Ashwin bowled the first over of spin, and Latham was out for LBW on the fifth ball of the eighth over. Earlier, Latham elected to bat first after winning the toss. India has made up to three changes after suffering a rare home loss in the first Test. KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav, and Mohammed Siraj have been dropped, while Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep have been added.
